William Blythe’s high quality potassium iodate meets the requirements of the Food Chemicals Codex for the manufacture of food (ingredients and additives) and processing aids. It is an effective oxidising agent and has applications in food manufacturing, for example, accelerating the fermentation reactions in bread dough that enable bread to rise on baking.
It also has good stability and is approved as an iodine supplement. Iodine is essential for good health and is needed for effective thyroid gland operation, which affects the body’s metabolic and immunity functions. In the event of exposure to radiation, potassium iodate is also specified as a “thyroid blocking agent” to prevent uptake of radioactive iodine.

Applications
William Blythe’s potassium iodate is ideal use in the following applications:
Electronic Chemicals
- Used in light polarisation filters; adsorbed into PVA sheets, the resulting conductivity provides polarisation capability.
Food & Feed Additives
- An iodine source, with enhanced stability compared to potassium iodide, for addition to food to counter iodine deficiency.
Process Chemicals
- Used with potassium iodide to generate iodine in situ for the synthesis of iodo-derivatives.
- Impregnation of security papers as an anti-forgery treatment.
Product forms
